Anxiety and depression are often symptoms of the same problem. Something about you is not good enough. Anxiety is not the same as "healthy" fear. Healthy fear results from a real danger- such as a speeding car on a local street. Anxiety is fear-based, and at its deepest levels, stems from a perception of relationship danger or loss, either a loss of our "self" or others. You feel anxious when your automatic thoughts cry out that something dangerous or terrible is certain to happen. This can trigger a desire to run causing us to hide our feelings and emotions, or to fight and express our feelings in anger or rage. In contrast, when you are depressed, you feel as if the tragedy has already happened. You feel bad, telling yourself that you are worthless, a failure. You are far from perfect, but imagine you should be. You feel like things will never change believing that you will be miserable forever. If you are depressed, you'll also feel anxious. And if you are anxious, you may also be feeling depressed. What you know for sure is that you feel upset. If you find yourself thinking and acting in ways you'd like to change, please give us a call and we'll help.
